Introduction of Nagila

It can be said that Nepal has become a common habitat of people from different caste, ethnic groups, cultures and rituals from ancient times. As per the scriptures related to sages and Brahmins, It could be said that existence of Brahmins in Nepal was found to be from 5000 years ago. Moreover, experts of Hindu mythology, existence of Brahmin was found from 3000 BC, but as per the view of an expert of modern history, existence of them was found from 1200 BC only. Mainly Brahmins are divided into two categories viz. Purbiya (eastern) and Kumai (Came from Kumayu India) and they are further divided into Jaisi and Upadhyaya sub categories along with other cast and clan (Gotra). Nepal, Brahmins are scattered in hilly to Tarai regions between Mechi and Mahakali river.



Shyamgha Village Development Committee (VDC) of Tanahu is situated along the right shore of Madi river which is the border of Lamjung, Kaski and Tanahu districts of Nepal. Nagila, Chadaula and Chhimal Brahmins who have marital relation with each other are not found in other parts of Nepal are settled in ward 3 and 4 of Shyamgha VDC. Sishaghat Tar is the combined name of previous Chhimaltar, Nagilatar and Chadaulathok.

Nagila belongs to Valmiki Gotra (clan). Nagilas are Shuklayejurved readers. They belong to MADDENDANIYA DHUNDHULI section and PANCHA PRAVAR. Nagila has marital relationship with Chadaula, Chhimal, Gauli, Khaniya, Basaula, Chilubal, Sedai, Pantha, Kaini etc.

An inscription of Ram Chandra Nagila inscribed at Shaka Era 1709 VS 1844 (November 1787 AD) situated at Dangeuli Chautari in Aamdada ward no 2 of Shyamgha VDC Tanahu, is the witness of Nagila's settlement  in that area before  223 years.

A legal document attested by King Girbanyudda Bikram Shah's Royal Seal (Lalmohar) of VS 1860.3.12 (1803-6-24 AD) states  that Ramdutta Nagila bought 50 muri (12.5 ropani) land at Rs. 400 from Dataram, Shreeharsha and Maureswor Chowagain and paid Rs. 32 tax to the king and got KUSH BIRTA from king.

Similarly, Another document attested by King Rajendra Bikram Shah's Royal Seal (Lalmohar) of VS 1876 (1819 AD also states about a piece of land given in the form of Birta to Siri Ballau Nagila.

In the same way, another document of 1850 VS (1793 AD) states Ramchandra Nagila and Sukadev Nagila purchased a Badha (Bonded Labor) at Rs. 550. This document is witnessed by Ramdutta Nagila, Deusharma Nagila, Shreekrishna Chhimal, Durga Das Nagila and Narad Nagila.



According to Chandra Shekhar Nagila, residents of district Pithauragarh (Uttarakhanda) India, Nagila are Hindu Brahmin. They belong to BHARADWAJ GOTRA. Nagilas may be in that place from last 150 years. Their social status is good. They are scattered in different places in the Pithauragarh district and they may be approximately 100 families. These days, few of them have changed their cast by JOSHI.
